The Wamego High School Red Raider baseball program is one of the two newest activities -- beginning 14 years ago.

Since its inception, it has been coached by Jerry Johnson, won several league and regional titles as well as a state championship. It has also produced one of Wamego's only major league ball players -- Travis Metcalf.

Travis Metcalf

Travis Metcalf helped lead the baseball program to a state championship in his senior year.  After playing ball with the KU Jayhawks, where he holds the career home run record of 29, he became one of Wamego's two pro players.

He has played in the minors with the Spokane Indians, Bakersfield Blaze, Frisco Roughriders, and Oklahoma RedHawks.

Metcalf made the big leagues and debuted for the Texas Rangers on May 19, 2007.  In April 2009 he was added to the Kansas City Royals 40-man roster and assigned to Triple-A Omaha, but made the move back to the Rangers' Oklahoma roster in August.
